Little is needed to live well; much is needed to live as others think we should.Seneca · Scrisori către Lucilius · 65 · Scrisori către Lucilius, Scrisoarea 123

True happiness requires little, but social pressure makes us desire much more.

Seneca distinguishes between real needs and those imposed by public opinion. To live well, you need food, shelter, and peace of mind. To seem well in the eyes of the world, you need expensive cars, designer clothes, and status. A person who buys a bigger house than needed just to impress neighbors lives by others' opinions.

Why it mattersIt helps us tell apart what truly makes us happy from what we think we must have due to social pressure.
