“All warfare is based on deception.”Sun Tzu · Arta războiului · -500 · capitolul 1

Deception is the foundational principle of conflict strategy, not an exception.

Sun Tzu states that combat is not just brute force but manipulation of the opponent's perception. Deception means showing weakness when strong or strength when weak, making the enemy believe what you want. A classic example: a small army lights more campfires than it has soldiers, appearing formidable. It's about controlling information, not lying gratuitously.

Deception is not just about lying, but about controlling what the other sees. When a manager says a project is on schedule despite delays, he is not necessarily lying — he buys time to fix things. Sun Tzu would call this strategic deception, not a moral one. It creates a temporary advantage, not a permanent lie. The difference lies in intent: deception in war serves survival, not ego. The next step is to understand when this tactic becomes dangerous for the one using it.

Why it matters In business, marketing, or even relationships, knowing when and how to hide your intentions gives you a major strategic advantage.
