Force stays a calamity even when justified: use it only when forced, win without triumph.
The line does not forbid self-defense; it changes the right attitude toward force. A weapon remains an instrument of ill omen even when used justly: it destroys lives, breeds the resentment of the defeated, and corrodes the one who wields it. That is why the noble person keeps it close but never celebrates it; if victory is unavoidable, it is entered as one enters a funeral, not a festival. A leader forced into layoffs can act the same way — without fanfare, conscious of the weight of the act.
Why it matters Useful in debates about war, security, or justice: it separates necessity from glorification and asks us never to turn violence into a source of pride.
