Little leaves room to receive; abundance weighs you down and closes you off.

To be given little is to receive; to be given much is to be confused.Lao Zi · Cartea despre Dao și Virtute · -400 · capitolul 22

Who has little has room to receive; who has much is owned by what they have.

Lao Zi thinks in terms of capacity, not quantity. A nearly empty vessel can receive; a full one spills whatever you add. Likewise, someone with little stays open, mobile, and grateful, while someone overloaded with possessions, obligations, or certainties has no room for anything new — and is in fact owned by what they own. A flat crammed with objects or a schedule packed to bursting shows the same blockage: too much becomes a rope, not a wing.

Why it mattersRelevant to minimalism and to managing time and commitments: accumulating things, tasks, or ambitions looks like winning, but it becomes a burden that blocks the very thing you were seeking.
