Happiness lived in fear is already lost, even before you lose anything.
Boethius writes from prison, condemned to death, and Philosophy shows him that power and wealth do not bring happiness, because they come with the fear of losing them. The mechanism is simple: fear is the constant presence of loss, so a happiness that depends on it is already compromised. A rich man who cannot sleep for fear of losing his fortune is poorer in happiness than a modest but untroubled one.

Divine knowledge doesn't predict the future; it sees it as an eternal present, outside time.
Boethius solves a classic problem: if God knows in advance what I will do, how am I free? The answer shifts the frame: divine knowledge is not prediction but vision from outside time, where everything is simultaneous. As a person who sees an entire road from an airplane does not cause the road, God sees without compelling. Knowing that a friend will choose something does not force him to choose it.

Fortune never betrayed you: it only did what it always does, it changed.
Writing from prison while awaiting execution, Boethius consoles himself with a hard truth: suffering comes from expecting fortune to be a right rather than a loan. Fortune works like a turning wheel; its only constant is instability. Someone who loses a job, a fortune, or a relationship feels the world has turned against them, when they have simply entered the normal phase of the cycle. Grasping this does not erase grief, but it removes the sting of personal betrayal from it.
