True memory doesn't answer questions: it arrives unbidden, triggered by some trivial detail of the present.

Proust argues that the past cannot be recovered by deliberate effort, only through sensory accident: the taste of a small cake dipped in tea suddenly returns his childhood in Combray, whole and alive. The mechanism is involuntary — the body recognizes before the mind understands. What we consciously search for stays flat, reconstructed; what ambushes us unawares arrives with the real texture of the moment. That is why one winter smell can open a whole year more clearly than any photo album.

No sooner had the warm liquid, and the crumbs with it, touched my palate than a shudder ran through my whole body, and I stopped, quite unaccountably, where I stood.
