Silence and speech demand the same skill: reading the moment and choosing it.
Gracián, a master of the baroque aphorism, saw speech as an economy of measure. Whoever cannot control the moment of silence also cannot sense the right moment to speak; both demand the same awareness of context. Words uttered without judgment lose their weight. A negotiator who stays quiet after making an offer often gains more than one who keeps talking.
Why it matters It reminds us that in negotiations, conflicts, and delicate talks, knowing when to stay silent is half of knowing what to say.
