Silence and speech demand the same skill: reading the moment and choosing it.

Gracián, a master of the baroque aphorism, saw speech as an economy of measure. Whoever cannot control the moment of silence also cannot sense the right moment to speak; both demand the same awareness of context. Words uttered without judgment lose their weight. A negotiator who stays quiet after making an offer often gains more than one who keeps talking.
