Flawless beauty leaves you cold; only the crack in a woman disturbs and stays.
Baudelaire distinguishes between social beauty, flawless and predictable, and fatal beauty, the kind that creates unease. The first is complete and therefore inert; the second suggests something you cannot name, a crack, a promise, a threat. The mechanism is psychological: we are drawn to what we cannot resolve, not to what is already resolved. An elegant woman at the opera impresses; a stranger with a strange gesture haunts you all night.
Why it matters It helps explain why attraction is never a matter of a checklist of qualities, and why people who are perfect on paper leave us cold.
