Dostoevsky distinguishes between romantic love, which gets excited quickly and expects gratitude, and practical love, which accepts imperfections and works day by day. The character who says this, the elder Zosima, knows that true love feeds not on grand gestures but on patience with the sick or difficult. A concrete example: dreaming of saving someone is easy; staying beside them when they are irritable and ungrateful is active love.
