“In one day, in one hour, everything can be arranged!”Feodor Dostoievski · Crimă și pedeapsă · 1866 · Partea I, capitolul III
Despair judges too early: the turning point never announces itself.
The line expresses an almost religious faith in the possibility of sudden change. Dostoevsky does not suggest everything is easy, but that turning points arrive unannounced: someone who feels condemned forever cannot know what the next hour will bring. The psychological mechanism is real — despair makes us extrapolate the present into infinity, though the present is never the whole of reality. Example: someone on the verge of giving up receives a call that reopens their future.
Why it matters Useful when someone (or you yourself) experiences a crisis as a final verdict: it reminds you that despair's verdict is always issued too early.
