We all have strength enough to endure the misfortunes of others.François de La Rochefoucauld · Maxime · 1665 · Maxima 19

We easily endure the suffering of others, but are overwhelmed by our own.

La Rochefoucauld reveals a human hypocrisy: we are generous with compassion when suffering does not belong to us. When a colleague loses their job, we can offer advice and support easily. However, when we ourselves are struck by misfortune, that same strength vanishes because personal pain overwhelms us.

Why it mattersThis observation helps you become more aware of your own reaction to others' suffering and not underestimate how hard it is for them.
