Self-deception is the most subtle and dangerous lie.
La Rochefoucauld explores self-deception, the most dangerous form of deceit because it is hard to detect. We convince ourselves we act from noble motives when we are actually selfish, or that a toxic relationship is good for us. For example, someone staying in an unsatisfying job may claim loyalty, when in fact they fear change.
