Chesterton has in mind the crucifixion scene, where Jesus voices the question of being forsaken. In other religions the divine remains untouched by suffering or doubt; here, God passes through separation from himself. The mechanism is paradox: for the Son to bear the world's sin and emptiness, he must feel the Father's absence. Suffering is not merely tolerated by the divine but absorbed into it.
Why it matters Someone living through despair or spiritual emptiness can find here a faith that does not minimize the crisis but claims that God himself passed through it.
