Courage doesn't scorn life; it loves life so much it risks it for something greater.
The paradox works because those who do not value life have nothing to defend, and those who value it too much flee every risk. Courage is the tension between the two: you love your life so much that you are ready to stake it for a greater good. The soldier returning to battle or the parent facing danger for a child does not despise life — he defends it.
Why it matters It applies beyond war: speaking honestly at work, admitting a mistake, defending someone — all require risking something you hold dear.
