“The world will never be destroyed by the wicked, but by those who look on and do nothing.”G. K. Chesterton · Ortodoxia · 1908 · capitolul I
The silence of the honest in the face of evil is not neutrality, but complicity.
The wicked have limited power: they can do great harm, but they cannot conquer a world where others resist. The mechanism of disaster is different: the good majority, which sees injustice and stays silent, which agrees in its heart but lifts no finger. A neighborhood decays not only because of thieves but because neighbors who know everything never call anyone. The indifference of the many is more ruinous than the malice of the few.
Why it matters It matters today whenever decent people say it is not their business: it reminds us that silence in the face of evil is a form of complicity, not neutrality.
