The writer should shape every page through style and vision while never stepping forward to comment or judge.

The author in his work must be like God in the universe: present everywhere, visible nowhere.Gustave Flaubert · Corespondență · 1875 · Mademoiselle de Chantepie, martie 1857

The author's presence is felt through form, never heard through voice.

Flaubert here formulates the ideal of artistic objectivity. The author is present everywhere, in word choice, rhythm, the details noticed and the ones left out, yet never appears as a voice that explains or moralizes. The mechanism is persuasion through form: readers draw their own conclusions, and so experience them as their own. In Madame Bovary, Flaubert never calls Emma naive; the way her illusions are presented lets the reader see it.

Why it mattersApplies to anyone who writes or communicates: a message persuades more when the audience reaches the conclusion itself rather than being handed it.
