La Bruyère observes that reason and feeling offer opposite perspectives on the same reality. Those who analyze with detachment see life's social absurdities as comedy; those who feel intensely experience it as tragedy. For instance, a hypocritical politician is ridiculous to a clear-eyed observer but painful to someone who believes in ideals.
