Criticism is a superficial act; authentic appreciation is work of understanding.
La Bruyère observes that people quickly find flaws because criticism requires no deep effort—only superficial observations. Appreciation, on the other hand, requires understanding the author's intention, context, and the craft behind the work. For example, it is easy to say a film is boring, but hard to explain why the director chose a slow pace to build tension. Gratuitous criticism says more about the critic than about the work.
Why it matters It teaches us to be more humble and careful when evaluating others' creations, seeking first to understand before judging.
