“Nothing is so necessary for a young man as the company of intelligent women.”Lev Tolstoi · Război și pace · 1869 · volumul 1, partea 1, capitolul 5
Without voices that think differently, a young man learns nothing — he only hears his own echo.
Tolstoi puts in Pierre's mouth a belief of his own: a young man's formation comes not only from books and male mentors but also from dialogue with thinking women. They offer him another perspective, refine his sensibility, and pull him out of the rigid certainties of youth. A young man who talks only with peers like himself keeps circling the same ideas.
Why it matters It reminds us that intellectual and emotional maturity requires diverse voices, not just echoes of one's own circle.
