Nothing belongs in your hands; the only real possession lives in the heart.
Ownership is a temporary illusion: bodies weaken, fortunes vanish, people die or leave. Tolstoi moves the question from the legal to the inner sphere. You cannot hold anything in your hand, but you can hold in your heart the meaning things have for you. A person may lose a house to disaster and still keep within himself the beauty of the garden where he grew up; no one can take that away.
