“Choose not to be harmed — and you won't feel harmed. Don't feel harmed — and you haven't been.”Marcus Aurelius · Gânduri către sine · 180 · Cartea IV, 7
The event doesn't hurt you; your judgment of it is the wound.
Stoicism separates what happens from what you decide it means. An event becomes a wound only when your interpretation turns it into an insult or catastrophe. The mechanism is control of judgment: you cannot stop criticism, rejection, or bad luck, but you can refuse the label of victim. A colleague shooting down your proposal in a meeting can annoy you for a minute or scar you for years — the difference lies not in him but in you.
Why it matters It applies instantly to harsh emails, professional rejections, or online criticism, where our reaction matters more than the stimulus.
