Public perception, based on appearances, is often more important than the inner truth.
Machiavelli separates public perception from inner essence. People see the mask you wear—clothes, titles, gestures—but only a few have the intuition or patience to look deeper. A politician may appear virtuous on stage while being corrupt in private; the crowd cheers, only insiders know the truth.
