Existence is treated as a chronic illness, with sleep as the only medicine that keeps it in check, and only temporarily.

Living is an illness from which sleep provides relief every sixteen hours.Nicolas Chamfort · Maxime și cugetări · 1795 · Maxime 3

Life is the disease; sleep is just the medicine that postpones symptoms.

The maxim works by inversion: death is not the disease, life itself is, and sleep is not rest but relief from symptoms. The precision of the figure, sixteen hours, gives the joke the air of a medical diagnosis, which makes it all the more bitter. Beneath the dark humor lies a real observation: the existential fatigue we experience as something to be managed daily. Chamfort, who lived through the French Revolution and ended tragically, knew what he was talking about.

Why it mattersUseful when we want to name, with humor, that tiredness we never complain about seriously but feel every morning.
