Real success isn't applauded by others, but verified by your own lived past.
Chamfort knew the fame of Parisian salons and saw how empty it was. The maxim moves the measure of success from others' eyes to one's own past: in the end, the only possible reckoning is whether you truly lived — loved, risked, chose — or merely functioned. Whoever in old age recalls whole years of unbroken routine understands the difference.
