Some people's pleasure is receiving love; others' pleasure is giving it.
Chamfort splits people by where their pleasure lies: some feed on the admiration and attention of others, others on the act of loving and giving. The first type is passive and self-centered, the second active and outward-facing. The observation is sharp because both can look like love from the outside, yet their engines differ. A partner who constantly demands reassurance and one who gives without asking anything back show the two temperaments in daily life.
