Any talk about you confirms you exist; only silence erases you.
The aphorism, spoken ironically by Lord Henry, says something true about reputation: to be talked about, even badly, is to exist in others' eyes; to be ignored is to count for nothing. The psychological mechanism is visibility: attention, positive or negative, confirms that you are someone; silence erases you. Wilde's irony cuts both ways — society gossips because indifference would be unbearable to it too. Many people would rather court a media scandal than never appear in the press at all.
