Every favor received creates a moral debt that limits your freedom to say no.

To accept a favor is to sell one's freedom.Publilius Syrus · Sentințe · -50 · 613

Every favor received is an obligation you never negotiated.

Syrus sees a favor as a hidden transaction: whoever receives it takes on an obligation they never negotiated. The debtor can no longer criticize, refuse, or walk away without seeming ungrateful, and the giver knows it. The mechanism is social exchange: gifts create asymmetric bonds, and power shifts to the giver. A politician who takes financial backing from a businessman can no longer freely vote against his interests — he has sold, without a contract, a piece of his independence.

Why it mattersA useful warning against generosity with hidden strings, from personal relationships to sponsorships: ask what you're really giving up when you accept.
