The idea is that obedience is a school: having carried out orders, you understand from the inside what a vague instruction, an unrealistic deadline, or an unfair demand feels like. Obeying also teaches the discipline of doing what you disliked, which later lends your own authority credibility. Someone who has never been under orders commands from textbooks and ignores the human cost of decisions. A head chef who washed dishes for years treats cooks differently from one who came straight out of management school.
