Power demands discretion: whoever shows all their cards cannot truly lead.

He who does not know how to conceal knows not how to reign.Publilius Syrus · Sentințe · -50 · Sentința 12

Every needless disclosure is a weapon handed to your rival.

Rule rests on an asymmetry of information. Whoever reveals intentions, fears, and limits hands rivals a map of their own weak points. A manager who announces in a meeting which competitor they might join loses their negotiating leverage that same day. Restraint is not hypocrisy but control of timing: you disclose something only when disclosure buys you something. Without that filter, every word becomes a weapon in someone else's hand.

Why it mattersUseful to anyone negotiating, leading, or working in competitive settings: before speaking, ask who gains from what you are about to reveal.
