Suffering does not cancel beauty; it nourishes and sustains it.

It is the tears of the earth that keep her smiles in bloom.Rabindranath Tagore · Păsări răzlețe · 1916 · 15

Tears do not wash beauty away; they water it at the root.

The aphorism joins two seemingly opposed images: tears and smiles. The earth that weeps rain is the same earth that makes flowers bloom, because sorrowful water becomes nourishment. Tagore suggests that in human life pain is not the opposite of joy but its condition: those who have wept understand more deeply, love more attentively, and appreciate more. A hard loss can open a sensitivity from which care, art, and compassion are born.

Why it mattersConsolation for hard times: lived suffering can become the soil from which good things grow.
