“Rest belongs to the work, as the eyelids to the eyes.”Rabindranath Tagore · Păsări răzlețe · 1916 · 26
Rest doesn't interrupt work; it closes the loop — without pause, work consumes itself.
Tagore rejects the idea that rest is wasted time. The eyelid does not betray the eye by closing: it protects it and prepares it to see again. Likewise, pause belongs structurally to activity, not outside it. The mechanism is functional analogy: what looks like an interruption is in fact a condition of functioning. A writer taking a walk when stuck, or an athlete sleeping to recover, shows that repose is part of performance, not a delay of it.
Why it matters Useful for anyone who confuses productivity with exhaustion: it gives them the right to treat pause as part of the work.
