“Fire tests gold, misfortune tests brave men.”Seneca · Despre providență · 64 · Despre providență, Capitolul V
Adversity is the fire that reveals the true gold of human character.
Seneca uses the metaphor of gold tested by fire to argue that suffering is not random but a refining tool. Just as fire separates gold from impurities, misfortune reveals hidden courage, self-control, and virtue. An untested person does not know their own capacity. For instance, someone who loses everything and rebuilds from scratch discovers an inner strength they never suspected.
Why it matters It helps us see failures and losses not as punishments, but as opportunities to discover and transcend our limits.
