The mechanism reverses the logic of poverty: your freedom depends not on what you have but on what you demand. If your wants fall below your means, scarcity loses its grip on you. Someone craving a bigger apartment than he can afford is hostage to his boss and his loan; someone living below his means can turn down a demeaning job. Reduced desire is a form of power, not deprivation.
