Happiness depends less on circumstances than on whether you recognize and own your own well-being.

He is not happy who does not believe himself to be happy.Seneca · Scrisori către Luciliu · 65 · Scrisoarea 9

Happiness does not rely on external conditions, but on recognizing and embracing your present state of well‑being

Seneca notices that many people live in decent conditions yet stay convinced that happiness lies somewhere ahead: after a promotion, a sum of money, a relationship. As long as it is postponed, it is never felt. A mind that refuses permission to be content always finds another reason to wait. Someone who tells himself that his life, as it stands, already holds what he needs begins to act like a settled person, and that settledness becomes real.

Why it mattersIt helps anyone who postpones satisfaction until some future goal and never allows themselves to enjoy what they already have.
