If you know the other and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.Sun Tzu · Arta războiului · -500 · Arta războiului, Cap. III

Fear is just uncertainty: know yourself and know the other, and confrontation becomes a decision.

Sun Tzu breaks conflict into two variables: yourself and the other. When both are clear, uncertainty vanishes, and fear—which paralyzes decision-making—evaporates. A commander who knows his army is tired but also that the enemy has low supplies can choose the right moment to attack without hesitation.

Why it mattersIn negotiations or professional competition, this double knowledge helps you anticipate others' moves while managing your own limits.
