Deception is the fundamental weapon in any strategic competition.
Sun Tzu states a cold but realistic principle: in competition, opponents do not reveal their true intentions. Deception means showing weakness when you are strong, appearing strong when you are weak, attacking in one direction and striking in another. For example, a chess player might sacrifice a piece to distract from a larger attack. This is not about moral lying, but about hiding your true strategy to gain an advantage. Those who do not understand this lose from the start.
Why it matters It helps us be more attentive to the signals we receive from others and not to take appearances for reality, especially in negotiations or competitions.
