True culture is the harmony of faculties, not their accumulation.
Maiorescu criticizes a superficial understanding of culture, reduced to memorizing data or facts. For him, authentic culture involves cultivating all human faculties – reason, feeling, imagination – so that they work together. A scholar who knows a lot but has no judgment or sensitivity is not truly cultured. For example, a historian who knows all the dates but cannot interpret the meaning of events.
Why it matters It encourages us to seek an education that develops the whole personality, not just memory.
