The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.William Blake · Căsătoria Cerului cu Infernul · 1793 · Proverbele Infernului

Excess is the path, not the goal; the vehicle to authentic wisdom.

Blake rejects the classical idea that wisdom comes from moderation. He suggests that only by living intensely, even excessively, can one reach authentic knowledge. An artist who paints day and night, neglecting sleep and food, may achieve an artistic vision the moderate person will never know. Excess is not an end, but a vehicle toward illumination.

Why it mattersIt encourages taking risks and stepping out of comfort zones to discover deep truths about oneself and the world.
