You seek meaning in external events, but true awakening comes from exploring your own inner world.

True awakening comes from exploring your own inner world, not from seeking meaning in external events.
Jung, a psychoanalyst, observes that people often project internal conflicts onto external reality, living in an illusion. Looking inward means confronting the shadow, dreams, and the personal and collective unconscious. For example, someone who feels persecuted by their boss may discover, through introspection, that they are actually projecting their own self-dissatisfaction onto authority.
“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

Your essence is shaped by the choices you make now, not by past events.
Jung rejects the idea that traumatic experiences or circumstances determine our fate. He emphasizes the power of conscious will to reinterpret and transform suffering. For instance, someone raised in an abusive environment can choose to break the cycle and become a loving parent, showing that it is not the past but the present decision that matters.
“You are not what has happened to you, but what you choose to become.”

The content stays the same; the packaging decides whether the message is heard.
The book's title is a provocation: Erikson starts from a man who complained that he worked only with idiots and concludes that the problem was not his colleagues' intelligence but a mismatch of style. A Red finds a Blue «slow», the Blue finds the Red «sloppy», Yellow thinks Green «boring», Green thinks Yellow «shallow». Each is right about the other's pace and wrong about their intent. The line attributed to Jung says the same thing from the other side: irritation shows us what we ourselves prefer. Example: you have to announce that the project slips by a month. For Red: «The deadline moves to 15 March; I need your decision on the budget by Friday.» For Yellow: «We have an extra month to do the launch properly — let's see what ideas we add», plus a written note with the steps. For Green: a one-to-one talk, early, about what changes for them and what stays the same. For Blue: the cause of the delay, the new schedule with dependencies and the risks, sent before the meeting. The content is identical; the packaging decides whether it is heard. Under pressure everyone slides to the extreme form of their colour — which is when adapting matters most and happens least. In practice: before you «read» someone's colour, listen for three things — how fast they speak, whether they ask about people or the task, how much detail they want. Then match your pace for that conversation, not for ever. And when someone strikes you as an idiot, first ask yourself which of their needs you have not met.
“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”
