   A child who has never practised small risk cannot calibrate large risk.

   The practices are concrete and often shocking to a parent from southern or eastern Europe. Children nap in prams, outdoors, at sub-zero temperatures, under supervision. Forest kindergartens keep children outside most of the day, in any weather. Free play, not closely supervised, is defended as learning time, not tolerated as a break. Playgrounds are deliberately designed with a degree of risk — height, fire, real tools — starting from the observation that a child who has never practised small risk cannot calibrate large risk. To this is added hygge, which is not decor but a social rule: time spent together in which conflicts and reproaches are deliberately suspended. And a linguistic practice: praise goes to effort and strategy, not to trait — you worked hard at that, rather than you are clever. The caveat matters just as much: Denmark has long parental leave, subsidised childcare and a dense social safety net, so part of the result comes not from pedagogy but from Bronfenbrenner's exosystem. Importing the practices without their conditions gives a different result.
