Orwell shows that totalitarian regimes begin by controlling reality itself, denying mathematical or scientific evidence. If a regime allows people to say that two plus two make four, then it cannot impose arbitrary lies. For example, in authoritarian regimes, denying the Holocaust or climate change becomes a tool of power; telling the truth becomes an act of resistance.

Political power controls the future by manipulating collective memory.
Orwell describes a mechanism by which totalitarian regimes manipulate documents and collective memory. If someone controls what is said now about the past, they can erase inconvenient evidence and impose a version that serves present interests. For example, a government might delete dissidents' names from archives or rewrite textbooks to justify repression.
