  1. Luceafărul · 1883

Human happiness is an ephemeral joy, while cosmic eternity is a cold and indifferent immortality.

Eminescu, through the voice of the Hyperion, contrasts two worlds: one of humans, limited and lucky, and another of immortality, solitary and indifferent. Human luck comes from ignoring the infinite; cosmic immortality is cold because it knows neither love nor suffering. For example, a person enjoys a moment of love, while a star shines for billions of years feeling nothing.

Living within your narrow circle, luck attends your days; but I, within my own world, feel immortal and cold.
