Believing you're exceptional doesn't spare you decline; it hastens it.
Tocqueville rejects the American belief in its own exceptionalism, often framed as divine will. History shows every empire passes through rise and decline, and believing you are the exception is precisely the illusion that hastens the fall, because it removes vigilance.
