An emotion ceases to be a passion as soon as we form a clear and distinct idea of it.Baruch Spinoza · Etica · 1677 · Etica, Partea a V-a, propoziția 3

The rational understanding of an emotion transforms it from an overwhelming force into a manageable phenomenon.

Spinoza argues that passions dominate us as long as they remain confused. When we analyze the causes of an emotion—for instance, anger stems from a perceived threat—it stops controlling us. Clear knowledge turns passive suffering into active understanding. If you understand why you are jealous, jealousy loses its power.

Why it mattersIn therapy or self-reflection, this principle helps manage overwhelming emotions: name what you feel and why, and the intensity diminishes.
