Writing to his son, Cicero shows that virtue is not a display quality: it proves itself through what we do for the community. The mechanism is simple — an inner disposition that produces nothing stays invisible and therefore has no civic worth. A man who wishes his city well but never votes helps no one and exercises no virtue.
Why it matters The line cuts off excuses like "I meant well": moral credit is measured in deeds, not plans.
