Never hand your peace over to things you do not control.
Cicero describes a hierarchy of inner strength. Whoever ties their peace to wealth, reputation, or health depends on things they do not command, and so remains vulnerable. The person with a great soul places their worth where they hold control: judgment, decisions, character. Someone publicly insulted can respond with rage and revenge, or can recognize that others' opinions are not in their power and move on. The contempt here is not arrogance but a refusal to hand one's peace over to chance.
The detachment Cicero describes is not passivity. The person with a great soul still acts, but places effort only where they hold power. The contrast is not between reacting and doing nothing, but between working on what depends on you and suffering over the rest. A candidate rejected after an interview can spend a week replaying the answers they gave. Or they can examine what they controlled: preparation, clarity, punctuality, and adjust only that for the next occasion. The first spends energy on chance; the second invests it in character. Accepting external things does not close off action, it redirects it. What remains to see is how, in practice, you tell what is in your power and what is not.
Why it matters Today, when opinions spread instantly and many careers hinge on perceptions we cannot control, detachment from external things is a practical safeguard against anxiety and decisions made under pressure.
