Loot-box games, betting, the infinite feed, pornography and fast sugar share one engine — unpredictable reward delivered often — so they are defended against with the same three rules, not five separate conversations.

The rule is not 'less', it is 'with an end'.

Schüll studied gambling machines and described what they actually do: deliver a small reward at unpredictable intervals, very often. It is the most powerful reinforcement pattern known in the psychology of learning, and it has since been copied into everything that scrolls on a screen. A teenager does not need to be weak to be caught; they only need to be exposed often, at an age when the reward system is faster than the braking one. The three rules that apply to all of them at once. One, friction: every loop needs instant access, so every extra step between impulse and consumption cuts part of the frequency — the app off the home screen, the card not linked to the account, the sweets not in the house. Two, a natural end: choose forms that finish — a match, a film, an episode, a packet — over forms that do not; the rule is not "less", it is "with an end". Three, replacement rather than removal: a loop taken out leaves a hole that fills itself, so you put something in its place, something with a body in it — sport, an instrument, a workshop, going out with people. The signs that call for professional help rather than house rules: lying about time or money, stealing, dropping something they used to love, systematically broken sleep, irritability on stopping. Betting by minors is a case apart: it arrives through advertising inside ordinary games and is the only one of these habits that produces real debt before eighteen.

Schüll noticed something counterintuitive: the loyal machine gambler is not hunting for money. He is hunting for the zone, the state where time and self go quiet. Winning is only the bait that keeps him inside. From this follows a practical conclusion: if the real product is disappearance, the defense is not to win less, but to stay visible. The zone lives in solitude, in darkness, in the absence of witnesses. A familiar example: a child with the phone under the pillow, at night, with earbuds in — exactly the geometry of the zone. Moved to the living room, screen facing the room, the loop breaks without any talk about willpower. The house rule becomes: consumption happens in seen spaces, not in hiding places. But visibility alone is not enough once the loop is already installed.

Passage 1 showed where the zone lives: in hiding. Passage 2 shows why the loop works at all: because the engine is the same everywhere. Schüll described the small, unpredictable, frequent reward — the most powerful reinforcement pattern known in learning psychology. When you learn something at unpredictable intervals, the brain never stops waiting. That is why five separate battles no longer make sense: games, the phone, pornography, sweets, betting. They all run the same engine, only in different clothes. A teenager does not need to be weak to get caught. He only needs frequent exposure, at an age when acceleration outpaces the brakes. Think of the open bag of chips next to the couch: the hand returns without a decision. If the engine is one, the defense can be one too. Next step: the three rules that cover it all.

Why it mattersBecause parents fight five separate battles — games, phone, pornography, sweets, betting — when there is only one, and recognising the shared engine lets three house rules cover what would have taken five bans.
