The mind is the origin of actions and therefore of their consequences: an impure mind produces suffering, as an inescapable trail.

All phenomena are preceded by the mind, led by the mind, created by the mind. If one speaks or acts with an impure mind, suffering follows, as the wheel follows the hoof of the ox drawing the cart.Dhammapada · Dhammapada · -300 · 1

Suffering doesn't come from outside: it's the wheel following the hoofprint of the thought you acted from.

The image is precise: the cartwheel does not choose to follow the hoof; it follows because it is bound to the same animal. Likewise, suffering is not a punishment from outside but the mechanical consequence of actions born of a mind twisted by hatred or greed. The mechanism is inner causality: intention shapes the act, the act shapes the world you live in. Whoever speaks out of envy ruins their relationships, then wonders at being alone — suffering has followed like the wheel.

The card shows suffering following the mind like the wheel follows the hoof. The next step is that this works in reverse too: a clean mind produces a life that carries itself. You are not only the author of harm, but also of ease. A repeated intention becomes habit, and habit becomes the ground you walk on daily. Someone who greets the neighbor on a good morning, without any agenda, builds a neighborhood that answers with openness. They didn't negotiate that; they planted it. So the daily check is not just a brake, but a steering wheel: you can choose in advance the mind you start from. The open question is what makes an intention harden into character.

Why it mattersA call for daily inspection: before acting, look at what state of mind is producing the gesture, because the consequence will come regardless, and soon.
