Our own convictions can deceive us more than any external enemy.

“Man's greatest enemy is his own opinion.”Ion Luca Caragiale · Momente și schițe · 1901 · Cum se naște o revistă

Our own convictions are the most dangerous enemy because they deceive us from within.

Caragiale attacks blind faith in one's own opinions. The person who believes they are always right becomes blind to reality and unable to learn. For example, a boss who ignores the team's advice because 'they know better' ends up making mistakes they could have avoided.

Caragiale does not merely say that our opinion deceives us. He shows that this blind confidence becomes a social trap. When we are certain we are right, we stop listening to anyone. For example, a parent who believes they know what is best for their child refuses to see the child's real needs. Thus, firm conviction destroys relationships and isolates us. The next step is to understand how we can escape this trap.

Why it matters It warns us to cultivate intellectual humility and question our own certainties.
