“Love is an illness that passes with age.”Ion Luca Caragiale · Momente și schițe · 1901 · Trei suflete
Passionate love is a temporary state, not an eternal one, that fades with the passage of time.
Caragiale, with his characteristic irony, reduces romantic love to an ailment that heals with time. He does not deny its intensity, only its duration. For example, a teenager who thinks they will not survive a breakup will discover, years later, that the feeling has naturally faded.
Caragiale does not say love lacks power, only that its power is limited in time. When a friend tells you they have fallen in love forever, you can smile. You know this storm too will pass, just like a blessed cold. Recognizing this limit gives us the freedom to live each moment without the fear of losing something eternal. Just as a fever heals, so does the heart recover.
Why it matters It helps us view love dramas with detachment and not take passing sufferings too seriously.
